Students who have an excused absence will receive extended time on their assignments. The extended time is not to exceed the time the student was absent. For example, if a student was absent for 2 days, the student will receive a 2 day extension to submit any work without penalty.
Appropriate Use of Technology
All students are to adhere to the district's policy of acceptable use of technology. In addition, the use of an technology in the classroom follows basic etiquette. This includes, but is not limited to, using technology only when instructed, using technology for the assigned purpose, respecting the privacy of others in the classroom, etc.
Contacting teachers
When e-mailing any staff member, please write formally and courteously, identify yourself, and provide the class period you are with the staff member. You should allow up to 24 hours for the staff member to respond. Do not use this as an excuse for not completing an assignment.
Make-up Work
Students who need to make up work due to an excused absence can do so by scheduling a time with Mr. Ower. He is available before school (7:15-7:45) and after school from 3:00-4:00pm.
Homework
Students must submit homework to Schoology by the indicated deadline. See below for rules regarding late work. Students typically receive 2-3 days to complete a graded homework assignment. Homework should be completed well before the due date to avoid issues with technology.
Corrections on Content Reflections
Corrections are offered on content reflections. Corrections are done at a student's discretion and will not be asked for by Mr. Ower. Students should take advantage of this opportunity to improve their understanding. Some content reflections may not have correction opportunities and that will be explained to students prior to being given the assignment. Assessments, projects, and skill demonstrations are not correctable.
No corrections are accepted if a student does not submit the assignment by the deadline. This means only on-time content reflections are correctable.
Many of our graded assignments will be submitted through Schoology. Different assignments will have different correction requirements.
In the rare instance of a paper assignment, corrections will be written on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the original assignment.

- Multiple Choice Content Reflections: You will have 2 attempts to earn a perfect score. Both attempts must be submitted by the assignment deadline.

In the rare instance of a paper assignment, corrections will be written on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the original assignment.
What is Graded?
There are 3 categories of work that are graded:
A majority of your grade will come from your content reflections (correctable) and skill demonstration (non-correctable). It is important that you do your best to earn high scores in both these categories as they make up the majority of your final grade. If you do poorly on an assessment but have high content reflections and skill demonstration grades, the assessment will not be as impactful on your quarter grade.
- Content Reflections (40% of the final grade). This is correctable work that assesses the student's comprehension of content covered through reading, lectures, and investigations.
- Skill Demonstration (40% of the final grade). This is non-correctable work that assesses the student's scientific skills such as designing and following a procedure, collecting evidence, reporting and analyzing data, and writing scientific arguments.
- Assessments (20% of the final grade). These are non-correctable quizzes, tests, unit summatives, and projects that assess student understanding over multiple lessons or of an entire unit.

Online Grades
When you receive your username and password, you can login to the Parent Portal: Wilmette's online gradebook. This feature may not be available at the beginning of the school year. Do not use the grade book in Schoology to check your overall grade. Only the parent portal has you most up-to-date grade.
Late/Missing Homework Policy
If you do not do your homework or if you turn in an incomplete assignment you will receive a zero for your grade. Here is the procedure for removing a zero from your grade:
I will not ask students for missing work. It is your responsibility to complete all work on time. No corrections are permitted on any work that is submitted late. Students who have an excused absence will be given extended time to submit their work without any penalty. However, once the extended time has passed, your work is considered late.
- Complete/submit the assignment within 24 hours of the deadline and submit it through Schoology. The assignment will still be marked as late and you will sign the red folder.
- Go to Homework Assistance before or after school within 24 hours of the deadline and complete the assignment. The assignment will still be marked as late and you will sign the red folder.
